Halpin TownHall FarmerLand 8.5x11 111626 RROCK ISLAND – State Senator Mike Halpin is collaborating with Citizens Against Heartland Greenwashing Projects to host a town hall regarding farmer land rights and carbon sequestration pipelines on Monday, Nov. 16.

“Farmers and other residents of our communities are at risk of bullying and exploitation to make room for carbon sequestration pipelines from private companies,” said Halpin (D-Rock Island). “It is my job as a state senator to fight for residents in our communities and not let companies put their profits over farmers’ livelihoods. The environmental threat of carbon pipelines can severely affect farmers’ work, and they should not have to sacrifice yields on land that their families have had for generations.”

The town hall will start at 6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 16 at the Knox Agri Center, which is located in Suite 101 at 180 S. Soangetaha Rd. in Galesburg. Among the topics for discussion are farmers’ land rights and carbon sequestration pipelines, which are both part of Senate Bill 2842, another discussion point.

If passed, Senate Bill 2842 would prevent a carbon sequestration project’s owners or operators from exercising eminent domain. Companies would still be able to create carbon sequestration pipelines, but they could not make use of farmland to make room for the pipelines without the owner’s permission.
